What is silk brocade and why does it matter so much in Tibetan culture?

Silk brocade is a richly patterned fabric that has been used in Tibetan culture for centuries, above all for what is festive and sacred. It is used to frame thangkas, adorn altars and make ceremonial garments. Its vivid colours and patterns, such as lotus flowers, clouds and the Eight Auspicious Symbols, express respect for what it enfolds.
