The butter lamp is the more traditional form. It burns clarified butter or vegetable oil with a calm, even flame that barely flickers. That steadiness is part of its symbolism. The light of the butter lamp does not go out at every breath of wind. It burns steadily, like the wisdom it embodies. The candle holder is the more accessible form for Western daily life. Candles are easy to find, easy to handle and available in many sizes and shapes.
