Indoor Prayer Flags

Tibetan prayer flags are known from mountain peaks, passes and monastery roofs, where they flutter in the wind. Less well known is that they have also belonged indoors for centuries. In Tibetan homes and monasteries they hang in prayer rooms, above the altar and in the entrance, as silent bearers of blessings.

The five colours have the same meaning as on our outdoor prayer flags: blue stands for the sky, white for the wind, red for fire, green for water and yellow for the earth. Besides the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, our indoor flags also show Tara, Chenrezig, Guru Rinpoche or the Medicine Buddha. In the tradition, what matters is not whether the wind moves them but the intention with which they are hung.

Our indoor flags are made of cotton in smaller formats, from mini flags to strings just over a metre long. Tibetan artisans in the Himalayas handcraft them, so each flag shows subtle differences. Protected from wind and weather, they keep their colours for a long time. They suit the meditation room as well as the living room or bedroom and make a personal gift for people who appreciate Tibetan culture.
