What is a Tibetan gong and what is it used for?

A Tibetan gong is more than a sound instrument. It is a guardian of the threshold. Its sound marks the beginning and end of a practice and invites stillness; in the tradition it is also struck to purify a room. In Tibetan monasteries the gong has called monks to meditation and opened ceremonies for centuries. This tradition lives on today, even beyond the monastery walls.

Our gongs are made by hand by Tibetan artisans in the Himalayas, from alloys that vary from workshop to workshop. The metal is heated, hammered and shaped, a process that requires experience and a fine touch. Because each gong is made individually, each has its own voice. Its sound is layered. It begins full and strong and unfolds into overtones that linger in the room for a long time.
