Incense Holders

An incense holder is often treated as an afterthought. You buy the incense sticks and hardly think about the holder. Yet it is more than a practical aid. It is the quiet partner of the incense, and it decides how safely, how cleanly and how gracefully the ritual runs.

A good holder meets three requirements. It holds the incense stick securely and steadily, even when it has almost burned down. It catches the ash reliably, so it does not end up on the table or the altar. And it suits the incense stick, since not every holder fits every thickness and length.

Tibetan incense holders are made from various materials. Wooden holders, often in cedar or rosewood, are the most traditional form. They take up the scent of the incense and develop a patina of their own over time. Brass holders last longer and are easier to care for, often finely engraved with lotus flowers, mantras or Tibetan auspicious signs. Ceramic holders offer a third option, plain, stable and available in various shapes.

Choosing the right holder depends on your own practice. For the altar we recommend a flat wooden holder or an engraved brass holder that matches the rest of your altar pieces. For daily use in the living room, a simple, stable holder that is easy to clean works well.
