Why does the right incense holder matter more than you might think?

An incense holder is often treated as an afterthought. Yet it is the quiet partner of the incense, and it decides how safely, how cleanly and how beautifully the ritual unfolds. A good holder keeps the incense stick steady even when it has almost burned down, catches the ash reliably and suits the thickness and length of the stick.

Our incense holders are made from various materials by Tibetan artisans in the Himalayas. Wooden holders, often of cedar or rosewood, are the most traditional form. They take on the scent of the incense and develop a patina of their own over time. Brass holders are more durable and easier to care for, often finely engraved with lotus flowers, mantras or Tibetan auspicious symbols. These pieces are carved or engraved by hand, so no two are exactly alike. Ceramic holders are plain, stable and available in various shapes.

The choice depends on your own practice. For the altar we recommend a flat wooden holder or an engraved brass holder that matches your other altar pieces. For everyday use in the living room, a simple, stable holder that is easy to clean works well. All our holders are chosen to suit our Tibetan incense sticks.
