What is Tibetan clothing and what sets it apart?

Tibetan clothing developed in one of the harshest landscapes in the world. On the roof of the world, between icy nights, wind and intense sun, people need clothing that keeps them warm, breathes and moves with the body. The best-known garment is the chuba, a long wrap-around coat. Traditionally a shirt is worn underneath, often made of silk.

Our selection includes traditional Tibetan shirts in raw silk and unisex cotton shirts with wooden buttons, in vivid and classic colours. Raw silk is light and breathable, with a subtle natural sheen. Every shirt is handcrafted individually by Tibetan artisans, so no two are exactly alike.

The shirts suit everyday life as well as festive occasions. For the Tibetan New Year, Losar, new clothes are traditionally worn. On cooler days a scarf or hat goes well with them, and for getting about, one of our bags and rucksacks.
