What sets Tibetan jewellery apart and which materials are used?

Tibetan jewellery brings craft together with meaning. Every bracelet, every necklace, every ring carries not only silver and stone but also a symbol, a mantra or an intention that goes beyond decoration. Silver is the preferred metal of the Tibetan jewellery tradition, cast, hammered and engraved by hand. Alongside it are the traditional gemstones of the Himalayas: turquoise, worn as a protective stone for thousands of years, coral for vitality and joy, and lapis lazuli, deep blue like the sky above Tibet, as a symbol of wisdom and inner clarity. These stone combinations are characteristic of Tibetan jewellery and recognisable at a glance.

Many pieces also carry a mantra or symbol, engraved or printed. The Om symbol, the endless knot or Om Mani Padme Hum turn a bracelet or a pendant into a quiet practice carried on the body all day. Particularly meaningful are ghau pendants, small reliquary containers in which a mantra or a consecrated substance is kept. From plain silver rings to finely worked necklaces with several layers of stones, Tibetan jewellery offers a wide range of forms and expression. Some pieces are restrained and elegant; others follow the Tibetan delight in colour and display with striking, layered compositions.
