Full Moon Singing Bowl Om Mani Padme Hum, Set of 3

The Full Moon singing bowl is made by hand in Nepal using traditional methods. As the tradition of these bowls prescribes, it is crafted on full moon nights: in the light of the full moon it is heated and hammered into shape by hand over many rounds of work. The marks of this process remain visible on the surface and give each bowl its own sound.

The mantra Om Mani Padme Hum and the full moon seal connect the bowl to Tibetan Buddhist practice, in which full moon days are considered especially auspicious for recitation and meditation. Its warm tone with a calm, lingering resonance accompanies you in meditation, during yoga or in a quiet moment at your home altar.

Om Mani Padme Hum is the six-syllable mantra of Avalokiteshvara, Chenrezig in Tibetan, the bodhisattva of compassion. In Tibetan tradition it is recited, printed on prayer flags, carved into mani stones and placed inside prayer wheels.

The full moon that gives this singing bowl its name holds a special place in Tibetan Buddhism. Together with the new moon and the 8th day, the 15th day of each lunar month is one of the three holy days of the month, when recitation, meditation and offerings carry particular significance. It is regarded as the day of Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light, of whom Chenrezig is venerated as an emanation. On the full moon of the fourth month, Tibetan tradition commemorates the enlightenment of Buddha Shakyamuni and his passing into parinirvana at Saga Dawa Düchen.

The moon and compassion are linked in the imagery as well: Chenrezig is depicted seated on a lotus and a moon disc. The moon disc represents bodhicitta, the wish, carried by compassion, to attain awakening for the benefit of all beings. On this singing bowl, the mantra and the full moon seal appear side by side as a reminder of this connection. The seal itself is understood as a sign of long life and happiness.

According to the tradition of the workshops that make them, Full Moon singing bowls are crafted on full moon nights. The work begins with a puja, after which the seven-metal alloy is melted in the light of the full moon and worked by hand. Each of the seven metals is traditionally associated with a celestial body, silver with the moon.

Place the singing bowl on its cushion or hold it on the flat of your hand without touching the rim.

Striking: Tap the outer wall gently with the mallet, slightly below the rim, and let the tone fade out completely.

Singing: Guide the mallet around the outside of the rim in slow circles with light, even pressure. After a few rounds, a sustained tone builds up. Too much pressure or too fast a pace can make the bowl rattle.

The singing bowl is well suited to opening and closing a meditation, accompanying yoga, or marking a quiet moment at your home altar.

We measure each singing bowl by hand. As each piece is handmade, slight variations are possible. The shape and colour of the mallet and cushion may vary.

After use, wipe the singing bowl with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Avoid detergents and abrasive cleaners. Over time a natural patina forms, which does not affect the sound. If you would like to brighten the surface, a mild metal polish applied sparingly is suitable. Store the singing bowl dry on its cushion and protect the rim from knocks, as dents or cracks can permanently change its tone.
