Twisted Copper Bangle with Rope Wire, Adjustable, 19 cm

This open copper bangle is handmade in Nepal. Sturdy twisted copper strands alternate with fine rope wire, and the darkened grooves make the pattern stand out in relief.

Its weight gives the bangle a noticeable presence on the wrist. The open back lets you adjust it carefully, and over time the patina deepens in the grooves.

In Tibetan, copper is called «zangs». For centuries the metal has been an important material in Himalayan art. Many Buddha statues from Nepal and Tibet are made of repoussé or cast copper, which is then fire-gilded. Water vessels and ritual vessels are also traditionally made of copper.

The twisted pattern with its fine rope wire is a design element of the craft, not a religious symbol. Its meaning lies in the material and in the handwork that creates it.

Hold the bangle with the open side facing the inside of your wrist and slide it on sideways over the narrowest point. To adjust it, bend it gently and evenly along its whole length, not just at the ends. As it is sturdier than a slim bangle, this takes a little more strength. It is best to adjust the size once, as frequent bending weakens the metal.

The bangle can be worn on its own or combined with slimmer bangles and a mala.

As each bangle is made by hand, slight variations are possible.

Copper reacts with air, moisture and skin contact and darkens over time, more in the grooves than on the strands. To refresh the shine, rub the bangle with a little lemon juice with salt, or with vinegar, using a soft toothbrush for the grooves. Then rinse it with clean water and dry it thoroughly. Take it off before showering or swimming, and keep it away from cleaning products and perfume. Store it dry, for example in a fabric pouch.
