A room can be beautiful and still feel empty. It can be expensively furnished and still hold no calm. What gives a room depth is hard to name. It is not a particular piece of furniture and not a particular colour. It is more a quality of attention with which the room was arranged.

In the Tibetan tradition of the home, this question was answered centuries ago. A thangka on the wall. A butter lamp burning in the evening. Prayer flags that bring colour and meaning into the room. A small altar in a corner that opens and closes the day. These things change a room not through their size but through their presence.

Tibetan home objects are not decoration in the fashionable sense. They are objects that come from a living tradition and bring that tradition into every room where they stand or hang. A hand-painted thangka was made by an artist trained over many years, who sets every line according to iconographic rules unchanged for generations. A wooden altar cabinet was made to patterns developed in Tibetan monasteries. That origin can be felt, even by someone who does not know it.
